Game Notes

Game Summary

This game matched the top two teams in the West against each other before 27,011 spectators at McMahon Stadium, and in the end, the home team remained the best in the League with 9 consecutive victories. After a scoreless first period, K Lui Passaglia booted a 60-yard single into the Calgary end zone. With QB Doug Flutie displaying his magical talents once again, the Stampeders were able to get on the board as Derrick Crawford pulled in a 9-yard toss for 6 points. The Lions, led by QB Danny Barrett, were unable to get going once they got the ball back and were forced to punt. Crawford returned the ball for 12 yards, setting up Flutie for the 2nd TD of the night, this time a 31-yard pass to Dave Sapunjis for a 14-1 lead. The Stamps would score again in the first half, a 9-yard TD throw to Sapunjis, but not before Passaglia kicked a 17-yarder for 3 points. It was all B.C. in the third quarter, as the Lions closed in on a 21-4 Stampeder lead. Passaglia scored another single off a 71-yard punt as well as connecting on a 47-yard FG attempt, while Cory Philpot ran in from the 4-yard line to put his team within 6 points of the Stamps. The Lions then went ahead in the fourth as Barrett found Darren Flutie for a 7-yard TD score but Calgary did not stop as Flutie ran in himself from the 1-yard line and then completed a 2-point convert to Crawford to make the count 29-22 with less than 11 minutes to go. Passaglia went wide on a 44-yard FG attempt, counting only one point before K Mark McLoughlin was successful from 17 and 39 yards out. B.C. made one final attempt to catchup as Barrett once again found Flutie, this time for a 4-yard toss, but it would be too little too late, as the Grey Cup Champions hung on to win and to bump their record to 9-0 on the season.
