Game Notes

Game Summary

For the Ottawa Rough Riders last Friday’s game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats was a replay of a game they would rather forget. Paul Osbaldiston, as he did last November in the Eastern Semi-Final, booted a 27-yard FG with no time on the clock to give the visiting Tiger-Cats a 23-22 win over the hometown Rough Riders in front of 20,016 fans at Frank Clair Stadium. The only scoring in the first quarter was a result of a 41-yard pass by Don McPherson to Joey Jauch for a TD. The Rough Riders responded in the second quarter by scoring 13 unanswered points as Terry Baker booted 2 FGs and added a convert. Tom Burgess then hooked up with James Ellingson for a 3-yard TD. Hamilton took the lead late in the quarter as Don McPherson threw a 7-yard TD strike to Earl Winfield and Osbaldiston added the convert to make the half-time score 14-13 in favour of the Tabbies. “Ozzy” increased Hamilton’s lead to 4 early in the 3rd quarter, connecting on a 16-yard FG. The lead was short-lived as Wayne Walker ran under a Burgess pass for a 15-yard TD. The Baker convert made the score 20-17 in favour of the Rough Riders at the end of 3 periods. Osbaldistion had a chance to tie the game with 0:53 remaining on the clock but his 39-yard FG attempt was wide. The Hamilton defence held tough and the offence put together a last second drive, culminating in an Osbaldistion FG from 27 yards out with no time left on the clock to give the Tabbies a 21-20 victory.
