Game Notes

Game Summary

On a wet and overcast night at Ivor Wynne Stadium, 16,198 fans watched as their team was overcome by a strong Blue Bomber squad. Matt Dunigan got his team going as teammate Keilly Rush scooped up 2 fumbles by Hamilton QB Don McPherson in the opening quarter. Dunigan passed a 26-yard TD to Michael Richardson, who was playing in his 1st game of the year, and just over five minutes later, ran in himself from the 1-yard line to put his team up 14-0 after the 1st quarter. P Bob Cameron added a single on a 51-yard punt and K Troy Westwood booted a 50-yard FG to add to his 2 converts before Hamilton K Paul Osbaldiston answered to that with a 43-yard punt single and a 12-yard FG of his own to close the gap to 18-4 at the half. Tiger-Cat WR Earl Winfield returned a punt 71 yards for a major at 2:52 of the 3rd quarter for the only scoring of that period but after Richardson rushed in untouched from 4 yards out at the start of the final frame. McPherson was replaced by rookie Eros Sanchez. However, Sanchez was unable to generate much more offence as he faced a stiff wind. Winnipeg’s Donald Smith scored a TD for his team as he ran back a blocked punt 20 yards before Westwood’s single from 46 yards made it 33-11 with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game. Chris Johnstone added the final score as he carried the ball from 6 yards out and Westwood converted it for a 40-11 final. Dunigan completed the evening with a record of 23-of-37 attempts for 257 yards, no ints., 1 TD pass and 1 rushing TD as he carried the ball himself 7 times for 17 yards.
