One of the oldest rivalries in the CFL set the stage for one of these two teams to break their tie in the Northern Division standings at 2 wins and 3 losses. Toronto opened the scoring at 10:07 of the first quarter when Wayne Lammle hit a 48 yard field goal On the ensuing kickoff Sam Rogers returned the ball to the 55-yard line giving Hamilton excellent field position. The five play drive that followed ended with an 11 yard touchdown run by quarterback Steve Taylor. Paul Osbaldiston made the convert giving the Ti-Cats the lead 7 to 3 at the end of the first quarter. This proved to be the only touchdown of the game. Lammle made his second field goal of the game, this time from 11 yards out. Osbaldiston made his first field goal of the night at 8:06 of the second quarter. This attempt came from the 37-yard line. The Argonauts notched a single when Lammle punted the ball 40 yards into the Ti-Cat end zone. Lammle tied the ball game before half-time with a 40 yard field goal. Scoring in the second half was kept to a minimum as both teams struggled to put points on the board. Lammle booted a field goal at 11:25 of the third quarter from 40 yards out to give Toronto their first lead of the game. Hamilton tied the game early in the fourth quarter. Osbaldiston hammered a field goal attempt from 50 yards out. Toronto had two excellent chances to take the lead late in the game. WR Paul Masotti did not see Sam Rogers chasing him. Just as Masotti was about to cross the goal line after a 65 yard passing play Rogers knocked the ball out of Masotti’s hands. The fumble was recovered by Rogers in the Hamilton end zone. Following a futile drive by the Tiger-Cats, the Argonauts moved the ball to the Hamilton 35-yard line with 0:03 on the clock. Lammle sent the field goal attempt wide but was unable to score the single as Lee Knight punted the ball out of the end zone. In the first overtime half, Osbaldiston hit two field goals from 27 and 8 yards respectively. The second overtime saw Toronto fight back with a 43 yard field goal by Lammle. Hamilton rounded out the scoring with Osbaldiston punting into the Argo end zone for a single. Hamilton moved into sole possession of fourth place with the win.
