Game Notes

Game Summary

The game marked the return of popular SB Allen Pitts to the Calgary offence after injuring his hand in the off‐season. The match began as a defensive battle with no scoring in the opening quarter of play. In the second quarter, however, Pitts made his presence felt when he hauled in a 9-yard pass from QB Jeff Garcia to open the scoring at 1:32. K Mark McLoughlin’s convert attempt was successful. Winnipeg answered the Calgary challenge on their ensuing drive when QB Kevin McDougal threw a 82-yard TD strike to WR Milt Stegall. The convert by K Troy Westwood was good tying the score at seven. Calgary scored their second TD when Garcia scrambled into the end zone from the Winnipeg 12-yard line. McLoughlin hit for the single point. McDougall lead his team down the field once again after the ensuing kickoff but could not score the major, instead settling for a 40-yard FG off the foot of Westwood at 13:28. Calgary scored once more before the half was over when Garcia threw his second TD pass of the night to WR Terry Vaughn for the 8-yard score. McLoughlin’s convert made the score 21-10 at the half for the visitors. Winnipeg rallied in the third quarter as RB Ronald Williams powered into the end zone from one yard out at 5:50. The convert by Westwood was good. Williams second TD of the game also came on a 1-yard run during Winnipeg’s next possession. The Westwood convert at 9:10 of the third gave Winnipeg a 24-21 lead, their first of the game. Last years Outstanding Rookie, Calgary RB Kelvin Anderson scored his first TD of the night in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard run to help Calgary recapture their lead. McLoughlin was good on the convert. Garcia later hooked up with Vaughn for his second TD reception of the night. This time it was a 10-yard pass at 11:58 to make the final score 35-24 for the Stampeders. The win brings Calgary up to the .500 level for the first time this year with a 4-4 record. The win also extends the troubles of Winnipeg who have yet to win a game in front of the Bomber faithful.
