The race for a playoff spot in the Northern Division is heating up. Winnipeg, Hamilton, and Saskatchewan are all battling for the final two openings. Winnipeg entered this game 6 points behind Hamilton for fourth place. Hamilton punter Paul Osbaldiston opened scoring for the game with a 51 yard punting single. Winnipeg answered back with a 44 yard field goal by Bob Cameron. Minutes later, Winnipeg capitalized on an 80 yard punt return by Milt Stegall. QB Reggie Slack ran the ball in for a touchdown from the 1-yard line. Troy Westwood kicked the convert. Winnipeg continued to move ahead of the Tabbies in the second quarter. Slack hooked up with outstanding slot back Gerald Wilcox for a 9 yard passing touchdown. Again, Westwood kicked the convert. Winnipeg continued to dominate on offence scoring one more TD in the second quarter. Blaise Bryant carried the ball in from the 9-yard line to cap a drive that began on their own 30-yard line. Westwood’s convert brought the Bombers score to 24. The Hamilton offence finally started to move the ball on the next sequence of downs. WR Barry Rose completed the drive with a 9 yard TD pass reception from Taylor. Osbaldiston kicked the convert. Hamilton caught a break just before half-time when Tim Daniel fumbled the ball and Rob Hitchcock recovered. Taylor hooked up with trusty WR Earl Winfield for a 40 yard TD on the next play. Osbaldiston’s convert left the Tiger-Cats trailing by 9 at the half. Defence dominated the rest of the game as only 5 points were scored. Osbaldiston missed two field goals from 51 and 43 yards but scored singles both times. Early in the fourth quarter Osbaldiston made an 18 yard attempt to bring Hamilton to within a TD of Winnipeg. As Hamilton was driving in the final minute of the game, the Winnipeg defence slammed the comeback door shut. Brendan Rogers intercepted a pass from Taylor at the Winnipeg 12-yard line. The Blue Bomber win moved them to 4 points behind the Tiger-Cats in the tight race for fourth place in the Northern Division.
