On a beautiful summer evening in Hamilton, the Lions came looking for their first win of the season against a tough 4-1 Hamilton team. An enthusiastic 20,551 saw the Tiger-Cats jump out to an early 3-0 lead when K Paul Osbaldiston connected from 22 yards away at 2:17. The Lions roared back at 4:50 when QB Damon Allen hooked up with WR Mike Trevathan for a 9 yard TD reception. K Lui Passaglia added the convert to put B.C. up by a 7-3 margin. The Lions rounded out the first quarter scoring with a 42 yard Passaglia FG at 9:31 to put them up by 10. The Tiger-Cats cut the deficit by three when Osbaldiston added his second FG of the night, this one from 31 yards out. Hamilton grabbed the lead at 6:12 of the second frame when QB Anthony Calvillo, who was in replacing injured starter Matt Dunigan, teamed up with Mac Cody from 3 yards out. Osbaldiston’s convert attempt was good putting the ’Cats ahead by one. The seesaw battle continued when Allen hooked up with RB Sean Millington for a 20 yard passing TD at 10:34. Passaglia added the convert to make the score 17-13 in favour of the Lions. Osbaldiston added his third FG of the game at 13:45, an 11 yard attempt to cut the lead to one but the Lions increased that margin to four on the last play of the second quarter when Passaglia connected from 28 yards out sending the Lions into the locker room with a 20-16 half-time lead. Trevathan and Allen hooked up again at 13:17 into the third frame, this one a 10 yard TD strike. The Passaglia convert concluded the third quarter scoring and increased the Lions’ lead to 11. B.C. opened up the fourth quarter scoring with Passaglia’s third field goal of the game, a 20 yard boot. Hamilton then cut the B.C. lead to 8 when SB Jason Phillips was on the receiving end of a Calvillo 27 yard pass at 7:50 of the final frame. Osbaldiston added the convert to cut the lead to just a touchdown. Hamilton got to with in five when Passaglia retreated into his end-zone rather than risk getting his punt blocked at 9:36. This however was as close as the Tabbies would get on this night as B.C. went on to shut the Hamilton offence down and record a 30-25 victory, their first of the season.
