Game Notes

Game Summary

It was the latest edition of one of the CFL’s oldest rivalries when the Edmonton Eskimos visited the Calgary Stampeders. Going into this game the Stampeders had first place locked up while the Eskimos were trying to secure home field advantage for the West Semi-Final. It was Calgary, however, that got off to the start they wanted when QB Jeff Garcia found SB Allen Pitts in the end zone at 4:41 for his 100th career receiving TD. McLoughlin’s convert was good. K Sean Fleming got Edmonton on the board at 11:43 when he nailed a 35-yard FG. At 14:08 P Tony Martino added a 70 yard punting single to make the score 8-3 in favour of the home team after one quarter of play. In the second period McLoughlin added FGs from 39 and 25 yards respectively to padding Calgary’s lead to 11 points. QB Jimmy Kemp, who started in place of David Archer this week, found wideout Shannon Myers in the end zone from 27 yards out at 13:09. Fleming’s convert was successful. With no time remaining on the clock FB Duane Forde plunged across the goal line from 1-yard out to make the score 21-10 at the half after McLoughlin’s convert. The only scoring in the third quarter occurred at 4:21 when WR Travis Moore hauled in Garcia’s 5-yard pass at 4:21. McLoughlin’s convert was good. In the final period, McLoughlin extended the Stamps lead by nailing a 32-yard FG at 2:14. Fleming answered for Edmonton with a FG of his own at 5:00 from 48 yards out. Then QB Dave Archer, who replaced Kemp in the third quarter, teamed up with receiver Marcus Dowdell on a 2-yard scoring play. The ensuing two-point convert failed, however, and the Stampeders held on for a 31-19 victory over their provincial rivals.
