Game Notes

Game Summary

Calgary jumped out to an early lead in this Western Division match-up when RB Kelvin Anderson hooked up with QB Jeff Garcia for a 10-yard TD reception 1:28 into play of the first quarter. K Mark McLoughlin’s convert was good, as was his 32-yard FG at 6:58, giving Calgary an early 10-0 lead. K Paul McCallum got Saskatchewan on the scoreboard at 10:59 when his 32-yard FG sailed wide scoring a single. In the second quarter, Anderson added to his point total by powering into the end zone from 1-yard out giving Calgary a 17-1 advantage after McLoughlin’s convert at 3:18. Saskatchewan’s only scoring in the second quarter came as a result of a 2-safety conceded by P Tony Martino after he knelt in the end zone at 14:47, making the halftime score 17-3 in favour of the Stamps. In the third quarter, Saskatchewan battled back as McCallum opened the scoring with a 52-yard FG at 1:44. This was followed by a 56-yard TD reception by QB Reggie Slack to WR Curtis Mayfield at 5:24. McCallum’s convert was good cutting Calgary’s lead to 4 points. Saskatchewan proceeded to take the lead for the first time in the game when Slack scrambled 31 yards into the end zone at 13:36 making the score 20-17 after McCallum’s convert. Calgary rallied in the final stanza of play when Anderson caught his second TD pass of the night, this time a 2-yard toss from Garcia. McLoughlin’s convert was good. Saskatchewan did not relinquish their lead for long, however, as RB Mike Saunders scored at 13:12 on a 1-yard run. McCallum’s convert reestablished Saskatchewan’s 3-point cushion. Then with 26 seconds remaining in the game McLoughlin sent the match into overtime by nailing a 28-yard FG and evening the score at 27. Calgary dominated in the overtime period scoring 12 points in the first overtime half. Scoring opened when DB Jackie Kellogg intercepted Slack’s errant pass and returned it 56 yards for the major at 1:08. Calgary’s 2-point convert attempt was successful as Garcia hooked up with Anderson for the completion on the play. WR Terry Vaughn’s 5-yard reception at 4:50 of the second overtime half marked the last TD of the game. McLoughlin contributed to the overtime period scoring a punting single, chipping in a convert, and hoofing 36-yard FG, making the final score 46-27 in favour of the Calgary Stampeders. The win tied Calgary for the Western Conference lead while regulating Saskatchewan to a third place tie with the BC Lions.
