It was a cold and wet day in Calgary this week as the Saskatchewan Roughriders travelled west to play the Calgary Stampeders. Calgary looked to build on their back-to-back victories over the Edmonton Eskimos, while Saskatchewan entered the match hoping to rebound from last week’s defeat against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. It was Calgary, however, that got off to the start they wanted when RB Kelvin Anderson powered into the end zone from the 1-yard line at 4:18 of the first quarter. K Mark McLoughlin was successful on the convert making the score 7-0 in favour of the Stamps. K Paul McCallum got Saskatchewan on the board later in the quarter when his 56-yard FG attempt missed wide scoring a single point at 8:29. He made up for his mistake before the end of the first stanza, however, striking a 48-yard FG at 13:58 cutting Calgary’s lead to 3 points. In the second quarter, Calgary scored their second TD of the night when WR Terry Vaughn teamed up with QB Jeff Garcia for a 12-yard passing play at 8:13. McLoughlin’s convert doubled Calgary’s point total to 14 points. Saskatchewan quickly responded when FB Shawn Daniels ran the ball in from 2 yards out for Saskatchewan’s first major of the night. McCallum’s convert made the score 14-11 in favour of the home team. The see-saw battled continued throughout the quarter as Calgary scored once again when Garcia called his own number, sneaking the ball over the goal line from 1-yard out. McLoughlin’s convert made the score 21-11 for the Stamps going into the dressing rooms at the half. Both defences held strong in the third stanza of play with the only points coming off the foot McLoughlin when his 39-yard FG attempt sailed wide scoring a single point. In the final quarter McLoughlin made amends for his miss by nailing a 16-yard FG at 3:16. At 5:18, however, QB Reggie Slack took the ball in himself on an 11-yard rushing score. McCallum’s convert made the score 25-18 for Calgary. Martino added a punting single to Calgary’s cause after his 81-yard punt dribbled through the end zone. McLoughlin continued his fine night by hoofing a 30-yard FG at 14:46, A 54-yard TD interception return by DB William Hampton iced the game for the Stampeders, making the final score from McMahon Stadium 35-18 in favour of Calgary bumping their record to a division leading 9-3.
