The division leading Calgary Stampeders visited Taylor Field this week to play the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Calgary came into the game riding a 3-game winning streak and things looked good early for the red and white when P Tony Martino’s opened the scoring with a single at 1:53. K Mark McLoughlin added to that lead at 4:22 when his 51-yard FG missed wide scoring a single and gave Calgary a 2-point cushion. The first major of the game came at 7:14 when RB Mike Saunders powered the ball into the end zone from the 1-yard line. K Paul McCallum’s convert made the score 7-2 for the Roughriders. McLoughlin added a 35-yard FG at 10:00 to cut the lead to 7-5 at the end of the quarter. In the second period, QB Reggie Slack found WR Larry Thompson for a 29-yard scoring play at 4:05 boosting Saskatchewan’s lead to 9 points. McCallum’s convert was good. At 7:24 Martino added his second punting single cutting the Saskatchewan lead to 8 points. McCallum and McLoughlin then exchanged FGs from 20 and 37 yards respectively to close out the first half scoring with Saskatchewan holding onto a 17-9 lead. Kickers continued to play an important role in the third quarter as McLoughlin nailed a 12-yard FG at 6:45. Not to be outdone, McCallum replied for the ’Riders by launching a 37-yard FG at 11:47. McLoughlin chipped in a 34-yard FG at 1:04 of the final quarter, cutting Saskatchewan’s lead to 5 points. At 11:28, however, Slack called his own number and snuck the ball into the end zone from the 1-yard line. McCallum’s convert was good. Calgary scored a late TD when QB Dave Dickenson, who replaced an injured Jeff Garcia midway through the game, found SB Allen Pitts in the end zone for a 8-yard play. McLoughlin’s convert closed out the game’s scoring giving Saskatchewan a 27-22 victory. The game ended a 2-game losing streak for the ’Riders and keeps them tied for third place in the West Division with the BC Lions while keeping Calgary at 9 wins on the season.
